IT’S BEEN 5 MONTHS! I did almost 20 quick caricatures for Library@Chinatown ( National Library Board Singapore) in March, here are some of the ones i had fun doing. I think it’s not a bad attempt for a first timer. hahaha 😀

Till next time! (I.need.better.blogging.and.drawing.habits.)

we live in the retrospects

Posted in drawing, talks by Rui on December 30, 2013

Here is an assemblage of some 2-5 min gesture drawings I did over the past year. I did not draw that much… I am trying to draw more, but most of the time, I just ended up watching more movies.

The greatest gift bestowed upon me while living in a temperate country is the acute awareness of the passage of time. It’s like a form of memento mori. I was enjoying the beauty of autumn, then it transcended into winter. The change is evidential, you literally feel it in your fingertips… Does it help me to quit procrastination? Not really, I just shorten its duration nowadays.

How was my 2013? It was a stormy year. … let’s say if I could turn back time and make changes to any year in my life, I would probably delete and restart 2006 or 2007 or both, so… 2013 isn’t that disastrous but it is certainly not one of the best years in my life. In the hope of my future and the pursuit of a dream, I am coping… I don’t know how future will unfold for me, but I do know that whatever happens, 2013 is, undoubtedly, a very important year in my life, no matter how shitty it has been.

How’s your 2013?

If it hasn’t been all that good, I hope 2014 will be kinder; if it was great, I hope 2014 will be even more wonderful. May you have many great adventures!

So I bought a Sketchbook and captured some drawings with the help of my portable scanner! What a wonderful product at affordable price!

I did some character design sketches as well. Probably upload them later after i have clean them up.

first and second round of character design crit with Hans Bacher have been productive. I still have to “simplify” / stylize my character more ’cause i tend to add too much details.

round one:

it starts with some girl i drew on the bus ’cause she reminded me of the little girl in Fan Ho’s work. And then come the first inspiring design marked with the X.

some developments made for the second crit:

I guess I was too obsessed by the idea to draw something pretty. she doesn’t look like she’s designed for… animating.

Oh well, here’s something i made for fun. how I envision her clothes to be.

tried it out with existing fabric prints found on google.  Should be more of a patched work, i hope to come up with my own design someday.   And maybe i would do it like Camila do Rosário ‘s work here

Isn’t it just beautiful?

Also, i’ve found my inspiration for my cityscape design for the film.

here are some of Amy Casey‘s work. i hope to achieve something like this for the final look.

It has both the surreal and claustrophobic aspects that I was looking for. HOW I WISH I DID THESE BEAUTIFUL STUFF! OH MAN. but it’s  a great place to start on environment design. 😀 oh yay~ GO RF!

animals are so hard to draw

Posted in drawing, sketches by Rui on March 5, 2011

So I decided to take a break from human pose drawings and try the animal poses. and oh my god they are hard to draw. Made a bunch of ugly drawings. here are the better ones. all poses are 30 secs long drawn on harmony.

P.S. horses have the beautiful poses but GOD, they are the most difficult to draw!

More stuff to come after i scan my sketch book on monday. 😀

pose studies on harmony

Posted in drawing, sketches by Rui on March 3, 2011

down with flu and stomachache when i thought my flu cannot get any worse. I cannot really move out of bed or toilet much, so i did some pose studies. I LOVE POSE STUDIES.

Some are not as good. but well it’s fun. I did these with the harmony drawing tool with some 30 secs gesture references ( YOU CAN FIND THE LINKS ON THE RIGHT)

I love pose drawing! it’s so much fun~
